A Path Without Intent.
As I paint, a relationship develops between me and the piece of work.
I think of it as a partnership between the painting and I.
I explore, and try out ideas.
The painting offers visual suggestions, areas of interest, possible elements to develop.
I accept or reject them.
Playing with the paint I add and remove, modify and adjust, colour, composition, tone and balance, trying the while to remain open to the clues the painting presents. Not to dominate.
Slowly a cohesive whole emerges.
How it is that you recognise when a paintings finished, I don't know. You just do.
It's a good feeling.
I hope you share that feeling when you look at my paintings too.
