Land Escapes   2016

I return to the Malt House Gallery, Lyme Regis for my latest one man show.
It runs from the 2nd. to the 12th. September inclusive.  10.30 to 4.30 daily.

The work is a mixture of figurative and abstract paintings drawn from memory or walks.
All work is oil on canvas or canvas covered board.  This year I have included approx. nine paintings from a recent trip to Cornwall.  Other than two of them they were all painted plein air.  This had quite a influence on them due to the weather which offered wind, rain and blazing sun.
The strong wind was particularly challenging as I often had to hang on to the canvas with one hand while painting furiously with the other.  The drumming canvas fluttering back and forth a couple of inches meant fine art this is not!
When the sun shone the flies found the colours irresistible, a distressing by product of painting outside.
A young couple walking by took some photos of me at work and very kindly offered to mail them to me.  I've included them here to give some idea of the changing conditions.
If you're in Lyme over the exhibition period please call in for a chat and see what you think of the paintings.          Stephen

A Unruly Brush with Life          2015

This is the title of my latest one man show which is due to open on the 20th. November and runs to the 2nd. December 2015, at the Malt House Gallery in the Town Mill complex at Lyme Regis, Dorset UK.
Although there will be a few older paintings the majority will be new work done over the last year.
My subjects are mainly landscapes, but they are interspersed by abstracts.
The abstracts seem to pop up as a relief from the more regulated disciple of the observed scene.
There is one common denominator which runs through what appears to be widely different subjects and possibly varying styles and that is the ongoing tussle for supremacy between the head and the heart.
The heart impetuously dashes in without thinking while the head stands back, ponders and sifts through the carnage in an effort to bring some order and harmony to the painting.
